Immunizations

Immunizations, also known as vaccines, help strengthen your immune system and protect you against disease. It is in the public health’s best interest to prevent the spread of viruses such as measles, mumps, and whooping cough.

It is important that you and your family keep up with immunizations from early childhood to adulthood. At North Park Family Medicine, our physicians will ensure consistent and dependable health care.

Immunizations for Infants and Children

Your baby will start immunizations at two months. Remaining vaccinations should be done at four months, six months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months and four years of age. You will be given a yellow immunization card during the first immunization set.

Immunizations for Adolescents

Adolescents in grade 7 require standard immunizations from Public Health Ontario (PHO), including human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B, and meningitis. If you miss any of these immunizations, please contact us so we can direct you appropriately.

Immunizations for Adults
  • Tetanus booster is required every 10 years after the age of four (ages 14/24/34 etc.)
  • Diabetic patients are recommended to have Pneumovax vaccination
  • Adults over the age of 50 are recommended to have two doses of the shingles vaccination
  • Adults over 65 are recommended to have Pneumovax vaccination
  • Please do not forget to get your annual flu shot

Newborn Evaluations

Newborn babies should be seen in the clinic within two or three days of delivery for a complete physical exam. This includes measuring your child’s weight, length, head circumference, vision, hearing, reflexes, eating and sleeping habits. In preparation for this assessment, please bring any hospital records with you so we can scan them into your baby’s chart.

Pregnancy

Once you have established that you are pregnant, it is important to book a consultation with one of our physicians. During the initial assessment, we will perform important tests such as blood work and an ultrasound. We recommend that you start to take prenatal vitamins or folic acid daily. We will handle your prenatal care and provide you with a referral to an OB/GYN.

Important Dates to Keep In Mind

Once your pregnancy has been confirmed and you have been assessed by one of our physicians, you will need to see your family doctor every four weeks until you are ready to consult with your OB/GYN.

Important milestones along your pregnancy journey include:

  • 12 weeks of pregnancy
    • Early first trimester screening is recommended (ultrasound and blood work provided to you by physician at prenatal physical)
  • 18-20 weeks of pregnancy
    • Ultrasound for fetal anatomy scan is recommended to be done in a hospital setting
  • 28 weeks of pregnancy
    • Glucose tolerance testing (usually given by OB/GYN but if you missed your appointment please contact our clinic)
